Sussex County History >
Sussex County, Virginia was formed in 1754 from Surry County. Sussex
County is named after Sussex County in England. First settlements
in Sussex County appeared just before 1700 when settlers started
to move west and south across the Blackwater River from Surry County
and other counties in the Tidewater Region of Virginia. Sussex is
still a fairly rural county; Agriculture and Timber are the primary
industries and the first commercial peanut crop in the USA was grown
here around 1842.

The county is 45 miles southeast of the capital city of Richmond,
25 miles from the tri-cities area that includes Petersburg and Hopewell.
